This week the League of Extraordinary Bloggers assignment is:
Merry Geekmas! Write or photograph something festive and pop culture oriented.
Well, I'm going to talk about my favorite Christmas time snack: Little Debbie's Christmas Tree cakes!
Junk food goes hand in hand with pop culture, especially snack cakes. Sure, we all know which one is the most popular, but I've come to terms with the fact that I may have eaten my last Twinkie. However, if Little Debbie announced tomorrow that this would be the last year they release their Christmas Tree pastries, I'd run out and buy them by the case load!
Not to scalp them on eBay, either. No, these would be for me! I'd freeze 'em and thaw a box out just before Thanksgiving every year until I run out of them. Surprisingly, I'm not much of a snack cake eater. I love sweets, sure, but I usually gravitate towards ice cream. The holiday season is the only time I binge on this sort of snack.
And I do mean "binge". This year my girlfriend surprised me with a box of the tree cakes in early November, before they were even on the shelves at our local grocery stores. I ate one every night for five days straight. I cutback a bit now, but I'm currently working on my third box.
And I do mean "I". As in "me". Just me. No one else in the house eats them. My girlfriend hates them. My daughter may take a bite or two, but that's eat. I'm the only one that eats them.
Just how do I enjoy these tasty little cakes? Cold. I keep them in the refridgerator and scarf 'em down with soy milk (Vanilla-flavored Silk Light. Regular milk does not agree with me.)
I don't remember exactly when I first had one, but I was a small boy and my mom bought them for my brother and I. Ever since then they've become a holiday tradition, at least for me.
